How Rebecca Simon Built Her Six Figure Coaching Business on TikTok

She also talks about how she finds inspiration to stay consistent, how she grows her email list with each post, and how they become paid clients and students.

Rebecca Simon is a Virtual Service Provider Coach and the founder of The Success Society, a corporation that has helped hundreds of women build, launch, and scale their online service-based businesses. She leads and teaches virtual assistants (VAs) and online business managers (OBMs) through one-on-one and group coaching programs.

Prior to launching her business, Becca worked in human resources for highly esteemed companies including 24 Hour Fitness and Target. She quickly climbed the ranks, standing out as a natural leader in her field, before starting a side hustle as a VA in December of 2019.  

Since then, Becca has more than doubled her corporate salary and made strategic pivots within her business. She shifted from working as a VA, to putting her HR skills to even better use as an OBM, to now coaching other virtual service providers to build their own thriving online businesses. She has built a community of over 22,000 entrepreneurs, providing a safe space for her audience to feel supported, educated, and inspired. 

When she’s not working, Becca loves to travel with her fiancé, Nigel (the sunnier and more tropical the location, the better!). She holds a B.A. in Human Development from California State University in Long Beach, and currently lives in Huntington Beach, CA.

[00:00:00] Lindsay: Rebecca, thank you so much for being on the book your dream clients podcast. I'm super excited to have you on today. 

[00:00:59] Rebecca: Thank you so much for having me on. I am so excited to be here.

[00:01:04] Lindsay: I am very excited to learn all the things about TikTok. I feel like an old grandma when people bring this up, but I don't even have the app on my phone.

[00:01:13] And I am curious about it, but. I'm going to need a lot of convincing. So that's why I brought Rebecca on because she built her six figure coaching business using TikTok. And I know a lot of us are, you know who are listening are just starting and they're trying all the social media platforms and the fact that you might have to add another app on your phone and.

[00:01:37] More ideas and all this stuff that we have to do on a daily basis can feel really overwhelming. So I think it's really important to hear other people's stories on how they're utilizing an application to grow their business. So Rebecca, why don't you go ahead and introduce yourself and we'll dig into that store.

[00:01:54] Rebecca: Yes, let's dive in. I am so excited to get started. So my name is Rebecca and I am a coach for virtual service providers. And I started my journey back in 2019. So I came from the corporate world where I. Never thought that I would ever leave a nine to five. I was always super happy with my career. I was in HR, so I was, you know, moving up the corporate ladder.

[00:02:21] I was a director of human resources and I always was interested in the world. Being a business owner and entrepreneurship, but I never really thought it was for me because when you're in HR, you're always working for a company, right. You you're always there for a business. You're not necessarily ever working for yourself.

[00:02:41] But it's funny because I was at the time on the weekends and just after work, I was doing a lot of babysitting and nannying just for extra cash. And. I thought, like there was a point where I was like, you know what? I am just so over babysitting and nannying, and there has to be another way to make money.

[00:03:03] So I, I think I did what everyone else in the world does is they Google how to make money online. And I came across the world of becoming a virtual assistant and I was like, gosh, this is so cool. And I just started working as a virtual assistant online part-time and the more I became involved in my virtual assistant business, the less I I cared and, you know, was into my nine to five.

[00:03:31] I became super passionate about being able to create my own hours and you know, decide how my rates and my service. I learned how to leverage my skills that I had from my corporate job, into my virtual assistant business. And from there, I pivoted to becoming an online business manager. And by that point, I was really able to scale my business as an online business manager and leave my nine to five.

[00:03:55] And that was, gosh, I think in 2020, and I was working full-time as an OPM and it was right in the middle of the pandemic. And I think I did what a lot of people do or did during that time was I downloaded TechTalk and I was, I had zero intention of getting on the app to actually. Posts videos. I wanted to see what all of the hype was about and I downloaded TikTok, and I was like, gosh, this is so freaking fun.

[00:04:25] And I think I was so bored and I was like, you know what, I'm just going to start posting and just for myself and for my own Just for my own happiness, I guess. And I started posting about my business and my journey as a virtual service provider and a virtual assistant and how I pivoted to an online business manager.

[00:04:46] And I realized that so many people had no idea about this world of being a virtual assistant and working online. And the more I continued to post, the more interested people became. And I was like, gosh, I remember when I first started this journey, I knew nothing about becoming a virtual set. And I grew my platform around showing others on.

[00:05:12] That you there's so much more out there. Like if you, up there, you could be a virtual assistant. You can use your corporate skills that you have from your nine to five or from your past job experience and use them to become a virtual assistant or another form of virtual service provider online. And from there, my community grew and grew.

[00:05:33] And grew. And, you know, two years later I have a community of over 40,000 followers on TikTok. And I do grow my coaching side of my business to six figures. So it's been a journey for sure. 

[00:05:53] Lindsay: That's amazing. Congratulations on that growth. That's unheard of. I want to know what were you posting? What kind of videos were you posting when you first started?

[00:06:01] That really caught people's attention. 

[00:06:04] I 

[00:06:04] Rebecca: was posting a lot of relatable type videos, like a day in the life. More. So I have three content pillars that I really talk about on my platforms and with my community, but one of them is just being relatable and I was posting a lot of gosh, it was like day in the life type things.

[00:06:24] I think one of the tech talks that I did that like stand out to me is To a sound, you know, when you like first start out in the online world, or even as a business owner, you send a proposal to someone that you really, really want to work with. And you're so scared to like hit send and you review it a million times to make sure.

[00:06:42] Perfect before sending it. So I made a video about like how, when you know, you have a client that you really, really, really, really want to work with, and you're so nervous to send the proposal and you have to like hit send, and I did it to this funny sound where it's. It made it, so it was like funny in a way, but like relatable to every, you know, every, I think everyone's been there to that point where they're scared to hit send to that perfect dream client and they finally do it.

[00:07:11] And they're like, yes. So a lot of relatable videos just, you know, to show other people what it's like. I think also during the pandemic and during that time, it was very lonely and being at home and. Yeah. Having that community of people that understand is something that is really, really, you know, I didn't realize it was a privilege to have that people that around you that understand and get it.

[00:07:38] So I was more posting to, to grow my community and being that person that like just gets it. And from there, I, I. 

[00:07:46] Lindsay: That's awesome. Okay. So do you all have to just post videos with music in the background? Or can you be more educational? My thing is, for example, Instagram reels, the, the lip sinking and the pointing just isn't Lindsey.

[00:08:03] I just can't do it. And so I just want to, I just want to help people, right. So how I can't be alone here. So how can we go? The introverted. I just want to help people. I don't want to think of anything funny to do if I'm just being honest. Is there room for people like me 

[00:08:25] Rebecca: a hundred percent? Yes. There's totally room for people like you.

[00:08:30] And I think the thing about growing on TikTok and being on TikTok is just being truly like your authentic self. And showing up in a genuine and authentic way and doing what feels good to you and people see value in that. And when you show up in a genuine and authentic way, and I think that's for any platform to whether you're on reels or on Instagram or if you're on TikTok or another platform, it's just really showing up in a way that feels good to you and your audience can feel that and your community can feel that.

[00:09:05] You necessarily don't want to post funny things, then show up in a way that's going to serve your audience in an educational way. And just for people that might be the opposite, right? Like they feel like they can only do trends and they, they are scared to like, do the. The funny or the educational pieces, they just want to kind of show up and be themselves.

[00:09:27] There's also room for people like that on TikTok. It's just really, I think being yourself and connecting with your audience and showing up in a way that's authentic and there to serve your audience versus showing up because of. You know, I need to be on TikTok. I need to be on this platform. I know I need to be on it.

[00:09:46] So I'm just creating videos just to be here and TikTok. I think your audience can definitely feel that. And when you show up in a genuine and authentic way, that's just, what's most important, I think on any platform too. 

[00:10:01] Lindsay: I'm so glad you said that that's a great answer. And. A hundred percent sure for every platform, because you can spot the people who are really forcing themselves to try something that every in quotes everyone else is doing, and they don't really want to do it, but they're like, well, I have to everyone else's purple.

[00:10:20] So I have to be purple too. And then. Everyone's purple. And then we run into the same situation that we do on every platform. Everyone's the same. And then we all have to go to a different platform. And, and then we, it's like a, it's a weird cycle that we run into when we don't embrace who we are and who are not confident in who we are.

[00:10:40] And I think I would say I can't speak for, you know, this application itself, but I think that there are people who are interested in you on every platform. And it's kinda like you just got to show up in your own way to allow them to find you, because I don't think not everybody wants to watch a certain type of video.

[00:10:59] Right. There's billions of people in this world, everyone has their own tastes. And I think this is a good, a good avenue to, to try it out. I would say. 

[00:11:08] Rebecca: I always am so passionate about telling people how people are waiting to be discovered by you and TikTok is really in this stage right now, where tick talk wants to push your content out to you.

[00:11:21] They want you to be discovered by your audience. So. Right now is a really good time to leverage that app. And really just, even as spice, starting small, if you're already on reels, you can repost your reels to TechTalk and just showing up and, you know, Posting just by posting and just starting, you're already taking those steps to be seen by the audience.

[00:11:45] That's waiting for you on TikTok, because tick-tock really makes the homepage. They're very big on the, for you page, which is a page that's for you. That con that content is being put. To you buy exactly what interests you. So if you're already someone that's interested in becoming a virtual assistant, perhaps a TikTok will push content, that's around becoming a virtual assistant for you to your, for you page to be discovered.

[00:12:17] So we're in a really cool time right now where people are waiting to be discovered by you. And I think it's true for any app, like you said on Instagram, but really on TikTok. People are waiting to be discovered by you and doing those little things by reposting your reels or making an educational video even once per week.

[00:12:36] And just showing up in a true, authentic way can be a really, really great place to start with using TikTok. 

[00:12:43] Lindsay: If you're just posting an Instagram and you're not utilizing reels, how can you, what's an easy way for someone to get started on TikTok. 

[00:12:53] Rebecca: I am really passionate about just doing what feels right.

[00:12:57] I think so how I'm, there's a bunch of accounts that you can follow that will show you how to make TikTok videos. And that will show you how to use the app. We'll give you like tips and tricks and we'll, I think the first step is getting comfortable within the app. So the first step, because it's something new, right?

[00:13:15] Like just like at one point we all started on Instagram. We're all starting on tech talks. So the first step is just to become comfortable using that. And just taking the time to like scroll through your, for you page, get a feeling of the app, get comfortable using it. And then from there creating that first video, and I think that first video can be anything from an educational video.

[00:13:39] What's cool about TikTok too, is that I think in the past we get like two or at least with Instagram. So TikTok is an app where. They encourage trends. So they encourage you people using the same sounds, but putting your own twist on things or making it applicable to your business or your niche or whatever, you're on the app for.

[00:14:04] So for people that might not be so creative or struggle with that creativity using tech talk and starting with maybe a trend would be a great place to start and using a trending sound because. You can take whatever the trending sound is and put your own twist on it. And TikTok will help push that out to people that are interested in your content too.

[00:14:26] So they encourage copying in a sense. I don't like to use the word copying, but they encourage taking that trending sound or whatever that trend is and putting your own twist on things. So that's a great place to start if you're just not even sure what to post using a trending sound and putting your own.

[00:14:44] Twists on whatever the trend is, would be a really good place to start to 

[00:14:49] Lindsay: does TikTok like it when you're interacting with other accounts, just like, you know, the theory of if the more active you are, Instagram liking and commenting and all that jazz, is that the same there? Or do they like it more when you are creating something?

[00:15:07] Rebecca: They like it when you are engaging too as well. And I think what's really cool about the tick-tock app is that let's say you're scrolling on Tech-Talk and it's a video, like a pet video or a dog video or a cat video and you comment on it. Oh my gosh. Like so cute. I'm obsessed with pugs as an example.

[00:15:26] So I get a lot of pug videos and I'll comment and I'll be like, oh my gosh. So cute. And as you're growing your audience on TikTok, people will see that comment come up first when they're looking at the same video that. So it can be something completely, totally unrelated to you and your business. It could be like a video.

[00:15:48] You know, I think I was watching Mandy Moore just posted her first video on TikTok And I was like, oh my gosh, like this brings back such good memories of watching her movies and And I would comment it and I got, so that means that anyone that's following me, my comment will show up on the top for them.

[00:16:06] So it actually creates a really easy way to engage even more with your audience in your community, because they're getting to know you on a personal level, and they're seeing those types of content and comments from you. And They get to know you on even like that deeper level. So even if you're on TikTok, just like scrolling and just watching any like random video, you're still creating that engagement.

[00:16:31] And by commenting, people are even getting to know you on, on that like extra deep level that I feel like they, they don't get on Instagram. 

[00:16:39] Lindsay: Oh no, they don't. He definitely don't get that now, especially what other so you probably use Instagram. What other platforms do you use and how do you balance everything?

[00:16:51] Rebecca: So I love to talk. I have never to be a hundred percent honest. I have never been a fan of Instagram. It's always been really hard for me to show up on Instagram. Like again, for me showing up on stories and posting it's something that, you know, I've always felt like I've needed to do for my business.

[00:17:13] But what I will say is that I actually post all of my tech talks to Instagram and make them into real. And that's a really easy way for me to be on Instagram and to show up on Instagram because it doesn't take too much of my time to re repost. My tech talks into reels and that's what feels genuine and authentic to me.

[00:17:37] And I grown, I don't have like a huge audience on TikTok or on Instagram. I'm sorry. But the audience that I do have on Instagram, they've all come from. So you are able to connect your social media platforms and people that are on TikTok. We'll follow you on Instagram. And it gives them an, you know, that easy.

[00:18:00] It's like almost you, they like, they find you on TikTok, you're growing your community and then they follow you on Instagram and it becomes easier way to nurture them. Those people that find you on Instagram. So once you can, like, they follow you from tick talk and then they, you get them over to Instagram.

[00:18:18] That's when you, at least from where, you know, my experience has been, you can really nurture them. They see your stories, they watch your stories, they get to know you and they really form that connection with you. And again, like it turns a cold lead into a really warm lead, and then you're able to maybe DM them or talk to them in the chat and really get to know your audience and how you can show up and serve better.

[00:18:44] And from there you're, that's how I've been able to really show up on Instagram and use it in a way that feels good to me is more by interacting in the DMS and talking to people from TikTok. On Instagram. 

[00:18:58] Lindsay: Okay. I like that. Sometimes Instagram feels a little funky. We put in a lot of effort to show up on Instagram.

[00:19:05] It certainly isn't how it used to be. It seemed like engagement used to be so much easier to acquire. So maybe this would be a way for somebody to feel like all of the work that they do pays off because they're repurposing it to a, another platform. And I like how you use TikTok use or the top of your pillar.

[00:19:23] And then you distribute below. I think that's very similar. So you're not having to come up with new content for every single platform, which would be absolutely exhausting and probably a little crazy. How often do you post it to TikTok? 

[00:19:36] Rebecca: I try and post once per day, which I know sounds absolutely crazy.

[00:19:42] I know that sounds crazy considering you know, we're not used to posting that much, but I will say. A lot, like you get faster at creating videos, you become a lot more comfortable in the app. And another thing about tech talk is there's no caption, so. For me on Instagram, I used to spend so much time creating my caption and making sure there's a perfect call to action and the perfect, you know, I'm saying the perfect words and my messaging is great.

[00:20:16] And I used to, like, I think that's one of the reasons why I felt so hard for me to show up the, you know, the cap. It's not just posting the picture or the video or the Instagram story. It's like also the caption. A TikTok there's you can, I mean, there's a little space for a caption. It's not a huge caption.

[00:20:34] And it's not so much focused on using the right hashtags and like having the right caption. It's more about the video content and you get really, really fast with creating the videos as you become more comfortable in the app. And you can batch create content too as well. So I'll save sounds. And like, as I have different video ideas, I'll just make a note of them in the notes app on my phone.

[00:21:00] And when I do have time, like if I have like that two hour block to batch content, I can probably. Knock out, gosh, between 20 to 25 videos. And I'll be fine for two weeks. 

[00:21:14] Lindsay: I liked that you re I liked that you batch and cause I mean, you have the background and you know what, you know, going day to day, it can get really exhausting.

[00:21:23] Or if you have something come up and you're like, oh, I didn't post a video. And then it all just kind of crumbles because you weren't working ahead. So if you're just starting, what's a good plan to kind of work ahead. I'm all about working ahead. For somebody who has no experience doing this, and I'm like, how long did it take you when you just started to write now?

[00:21:44] Because you said you do 20 to 25 videos. That's insane. So when you first started, I assume you weren't doing that many. What was it like when you first started? 

[00:21:53] Rebecca: When I first started, I think it took me like an hour to edit a video one video. It's definitely it definitely gets easier as you get more comfortable in the editing app.

[00:22:06] Like the editing portion of that. But what I would say first is just spend time on your free page and getting a hang of like the app and, you know, getting. Getting the hang of just being inside the app. And then I would say like, just as you have ideas or if you have any sparks of inspiration, just make a note in your notes section of your phone.

[00:22:30] And what you can do is you can save sounds. So if you really, if you have an idea on how to use a sound, you can save them on the TikTok. And you can go back to your saved sounds and create a video. So it's really easy to put a note, like if you have any ideas or inspiration comes up, put a note in your notes app, save the sound.

[00:22:56] And that way throughout the week, or, you know, when you have that time to batch create content, you have the list of ideas and you can just easily go back into the saved sound section of TEP talk and knock out the videos. And what I will say is that. Like there's always room to get better. There's always room.

[00:23:18] Even for me, like, I'm like, I, sometimes I spend like more than I want to I'm editing a video and I'm like, oh my gosh, it took so long. And then I get super disappointed when it doesn't do as well as I thought it might might do. Or it doesn't go viral or something like that. But like, I think we were always putting so much pressure on us.

[00:23:37] Business owners. And we have to remind ourselves to like, there's always room to be better. And there's always room for even if it's social media or if it's your website or whatever you're working on. So knowing that and knowing. Like taking the action and just posting the video is better than not posting it at all.

[00:23:59] And there's always room for better editing or better lighting or better content, perhaps like quotations better content. But knowing that and knowing that there's always room for perfection, just posting the video. You know, getting the content out there and not spending all that time necessarily trying to make it perfect, but more so just posting and just knowing that over time you'll get better and you'll get more confident and it'll get easier.

[00:24:29] I think is a really, really important thing to remember, especially in the early stages of putting on TikTok, because I think a lot of it is your mind. 

[00:24:38] Lindsay: Oh, gosh, 100%. And I liked how you said there's always room to get better. I don't ever think we want to have the attitude of, well, that's as good as it's going to get.

[00:24:47] And then just sit there that there's always room for improvement. And if you look back on your business a year ago, or, you know, five years ago, 10 years ago, You definitely have changed and you definitely have gotten better and he wouldn't have, if you wouldn't have just started and just got dirty and did it.

[00:25:06] And I think that's important with anything new that we try in our business, whether it's starting or an app or a strategy, whatever it is. So give me the, the walk through like the roadmap, somebody sees your tick-tock video. And from that point to Z, they're a client or they're a student or they're a client of yours.

[00:25:24] What does that look like for. 

[00:25:27] Rebecca: Yeah, I think for me, so someone will find me on TechTalk and if they're interested, they might not follow me right away, but to talk, we'll keep serving them my videos, or if they're interested in becoming a virtual assistant tech talk, the algorithm knows that and they'll keep serving my videos to that person.

[00:25:45] And then they'll eventually follow me. There is a cool. Aspects of the tick talk app where you can answer questions. So people will ask questions and you can answer them with a video. So they might ask a question or they might cert engaging with your content and I, what I've done that I would highly recommend it.

[00:26:06] For me, I have different freebies. So my opt-ins and my lead magnets, I've made like fun videos to get people to opt in to my lead magnets. So that's how I've been able to build my email list. And from there I have, I do have a funnel that leads them into my offers. I always am talking about my low ticket offers.

[00:26:31] Well, not always, but I would say probably a few times a month, I'll create a video about my low ticket offer or I'll you know, I'll answer a question and I'll kind of lead them into my lead magnet or my freebie, or I'll try and get them to follow me over on Instagram. And then from there I can nurture them on Instagram or I can get them onto me.

[00:26:53] Email list and they get to know me to where they can opt in to my low ticket offer or that I can convert them perhaps a better word. I can convert them to, into my low ticket offer. And then from there, there's a different funnel that goes into. Leading them into other offers too, as well. So for me, I have been really successful and I think a really easy thing to do is create a video around your lead magnet and get them to follow you on Instagram and engage with them.

[00:27:24] And using tick talk as a top of the funnel tool to just get them into your audience and your community. So you can nurture them and convert them on your email list or get them over to Instagram or another platform and convert them from there. 

[00:27:39] Lindsay: So you can promote your freebies on TikTok. And so you're able to link out content on there.

[00:27:45] How does that. 

[00:27:46] Rebecca: Yeah. So I recently made a video, so I have a new freebie and it's a quiz. And it's all about how you can use the skills that you already have in the online world. So I just made a quick little fun video about how, like, if you don't know how you can use your skills in the corporate world to take my new quiz that I have.

[00:28:08] And you're able to link just like on Instagram, there's like a Lincoln bio-type. Type place on your bio in your profile. So I'll link it there and get people to take my quiz from the link in my bio, on my profile. 

[00:28:24] Lindsay: Okay, perfect. And do you find that you get way more people to do that on TikTok then on Instagram when you do it?

[00:28:31] Rebecca: Oh yes, a hundred percent. And I always think about it too. Like. If you are a video and this is for reals too. If your video is being shown to LA, people always ask me, like, how do you measure success? Or how do you know when your video is doing well? Or like, quote unquote, going viral? Or how do you know, like, how do you measure that?

[00:28:54] So for me, the way that I look at it is that if you're B if your video is being pushed to more people that you have. Followers. So if you have 500 followers and your video is being posted and pushed to 3000 people, that's still a win because your video is still being shown to 2,500 new. People, if that makes sense.

[00:29:18] So even if you only have a thousand followers, or if you have 700 followers, if your video is being pushed to 4,000 people, that is still a huge win because your video is being pushed to more people than you have followed. 

[00:29:32] Lindsay: Makes total sense when new apps come out and people jump on the bandwagon right away and they see quick success.

[00:29:39] Do you find that that's still the case now in 2022 or has that kind of tapered off a little bit and it's might be a little bit more difficult than it was for you back in 2020 when you first came in. 

[00:29:53] Rebecca: You know, I think that is something like, people are like, oh, it's too late for me to be on TikTok like I am too late to be on there to really grow and add that they're out of the beginning stages of the app.

[00:30:06] But I honestly don't think that's true because I see people joining the app every single day and just growing and finding their people and they're serving their audience and just showing up. And those people are truly growing. So quickly, gosh, they're growing so quickly and I am seeing huge brands come on, TikTok and not growing as quickly as some of these small business owners and creators.

[00:30:33] And it's because they're showing up just in a true and authentic way. And just showing up in this way of. Serving your audience and your community versus being on tick. Talk to just be on TikTok and to know like we talked about earlier, it's like just to be on it. I see people just growing even quicker than I am just by being themselves and showing up in a way that's to serve their audience rather than just to be on the app.

[00:31:03] Lindsay: This was a very informative, it makes me excited about it. I might download it just to see I'm going to have to listen to it again, Rebecca. I see, I see the value. I, I definitely see the value in it and I like how, it's not another thing to add to your plate. It can maybe be something that will help your, your business grow and then you can pull from that.

[00:31:26] And maybe it's just time. If you're feeling like things are just stagnant and. And stale with all the other apps that you're on. Maybe it's time to spice things up a little bit and try something new and fresh and freshen up the room and give yourself a new, a new direction. Some new motivation. I think sometimes we feel like we might get stuck in a rut in our business, and we're doing the same thing all the time.

[00:31:50] And maybe you can use that as an excuse to jump over Rebecca, how can people find you and how can they find you?

And what's so funny too, is if you ask anyone about like me and my business two years ago, you were like, oh, do you think Rebecca would ever be on TikTok?
