How To Do What You Love and Be Happy

How To Do What You Love and Be Happy

What a dreamy title this is, isn't it? How To Do What You Love and Be Happy.  Let's just dive right in shall we?

#1 Decide what makes you happy. What is the first positive activity you think about when you wake up in the morning? Is it your work? Not many people wake up in the morning and think, "boy I can't wait to go to work today!" There are many people who do though! Whether they work for someone else or they're their own boss, they do exist! How? Because they haven't settled. They decided that under the category of "work" they will not do something that doesn't make them fill fulfilled and happy. They decided that life is to short to be miserable and they found what they need. Get out a piece of paper and start making a list of every little thing that makes you happy. From the smell of fresh cut grass, to writing in your journal, to jewelry making, to reading a book. There's no wrong answer.

#2 Decide who makes you happy. Are you surrounding yourself with people who make you happy or are you surrounding yourself with people you have nothing in common with and who make you want to pull your hair out. We all have a choice of who we associate with. Regardless of what we've been taught or what "society" says, I truly believe that if people (whether they are family or not) drain you and give you nothing but negativity and headaches then there is no need for them. Life is way too short. Be with people who inspire you, who you can have a conversation with, that don't gossip, that love coming up with ideas and solutions, that ask you questions, and genuinely care for you and the values that you have.

#3 Get rid of all of the negative nelly's. I am so against the negative nelly's out there, I think I could be the president of that club if it existed. Like I said before, life is too short. If you're constantly being shut down or negatively analyzed when you feel like you need a good shot of positivity and inspiration, tell that person to take a hike. If you want to start your own business and make dream catchers GO FOR IT! If you want to sell your house and live in tiny home, GO FOR IT! If you want to write a book, GO FOR IT! The people in your life that are constantly negative are not "just being realistic" as most will say, they are the ones who are afraid to take risks and put themselves out there. You're not like them. You don't give a hoot what anyone things, because as cheesy as it sounds, the only true failure is when you stop trying.

#4 The takers have to go. Some people feel like everything will either be handed to them or they'll just take it. Not you. You know that if you want something, you can't just take it. You know that once you set your eyes on a goal or a career there's nothing standing in your way. The takers will only bring you down and make you turn around. Keep going on that path and you will find there will be rough spots, but you've got the attitude and determination to get you through anything. Because you've set those goals in place, you have a plan of action, and you're DOING IT.

#5 Wake up every day and tell yourself how you want it to be. Do you want today to be a good day? Simple. Wake up. Tell yourself, today is going to be a good day and then SMILE! Maybe even tell yourself this while you're looking in the mirror brushing your teeth. :)

#6 Develop routines. Don't wing it. Set up some routines that make you feel balanced. Even if it's just a few things to start with, it's enough to build upon. No, you don't have to go through your day like a robot, although I sometimes feel like I do (I crave routine), but it is important especially when you are your own boss. If you just turn on your computer and plop down with your coffee and go between Facebook and emails you're never going to get anything done. I can promise you that. Create routines that make you get productive in the smartest and fastest way.

#7 Add healthy habits. Drink lots of water (like a gallon a day), eat as clean as possible, get some exercise in a few times a week (especially if you're behind the computer a lot), and get plenty of sleep. Easier said than done when you have little ones, I totally get it.

#8 Read. Read books that inspire and educate you. I know it's fun to read a fictional book, but are you really learning anything? If you're looking for more in your life and your business then find the books that will help guide you to where you want to be. There is no shortage. If you find you're too busy to read a book then you can always listen to an audio book. There's always a solution.

#9 Plan. Make a plan for the day ahead, week ahead, and a rough draft of the month ahead. What kinds of tasks need to get done. What do you need to be working on or working with? Write it all down and then rank by importance and give them a deadline. Always be thinking about the future.

#10 Work Hard. If you truly want to do what you love, know this, it's possible. We are so unbelievable lucky to be living right now. The abundance of knowledge is never ending, the connections to people we used to think are unreachable are now possible, and our lives can be changed with just some good old hard work. You just have to find the right tools, the right people to help you, and have the determination to get it done.

#11 Make time for the important people in your life. While you're working on your dream and doing what makes you happy, make sure those really important people like your spouse, kids, etc. are still your number one priority. And make sure they know that too. Set some boundaries with your work hours and enjoy your life.

#12 Be strong in your conviction. Write down why you're doing what you're doing, so when you feel a little weak or a negative nelly crept in while you weren't looking and brought you a step back you can always refer to that strong conviction and WHY. If you did a good job on this, it will always bring you back.

#13 Stop trying to please everyone. It's impossible. So stop worrying about it. Most of the time the people you keep trying to please without any success are the negative nelly's and the takers. It's never ending, so stop draining yourself before you're depleted.

#14 Stop thinking about all the ways things can go wrong. We can all think of horrible and disastrous scenarios for just about anything. But, does that do us any good. NO. We can't avoid certain things, but if we have the right tools and mindset to get through tough times it will make that walk just a little bit easier.

#15 Start thinking about what has gone right and how you can do it some more. Are you even aware of all of the things that have gone right in your personal and professional life? Think about it. How did you make that happen? How can you expand upon that and build more happiness?

#16 Be a well oiled machine. Don't let any part of you fail or run like crap. Get a tune up. You're irreplaceable.

#17 Set goals. Short term. Long term. Set them. Come up with a plan to achieve each one. And follow through.

#18 Step out of your box. If there's something that scares you, but you keep thinking about doing it (and you're not going to hurt someone) then do it! Do you keep thinking about starting a blog or public speaking, but you're afraid of what everyone will say? Who cares! Are you afraid you'll get zero support? Don't worry about it! There will be so many people you never knew existed who will crawl out from the woodwork and be your biggest fan. Those are the people that matter. That's what you're doing this for. Show them that if you can do it, so can they.

#19 Challenge yourself. Stop talking yourself out of things and challenge yourself to something that you know will only build you up and make you a better person.

#20 Stop doubting everything. Doubting is just another way to make excuses. You'll never get anywhere beyond the doubt if you keep coming up with "maybes and buts" Trust your intuition and just go for it.

#21 Become a problem solver. We have every answer at our finger tips. If you're not sure how to do something then look it up. If you're not sure why you feel a certain way, look it up. Be resourceful. Find answers on your own is empowering and a great way to remember and teach to the next person.

#22 Listen. Last, but not least. Listen. Just listen. Open your mind. Listen to what the world is telling you. Make up your own mind and know why you stand firm in something. This is the only way we can truly feel empowered to make our own decisions, hold validity, be strong, and thoughtful.

My new motto: Stop drifting. Unearth your mission. And what it means.

My new motto: Stop drifting. Unearth your mission. And what it means.

I was thinking real deep one day.  It happens once every 32 years. About my business and how much it's changed since I very first started over five years ago. What a roller coaster it's been. Well, actually I've never been on a roller coaster. And I don't plan on it either. But, I know there have been alot of ups and downs and huge twists and turns. HUGE. If you would have told me 5 years ago, while I was writing my healthy lifestyle and fitness blog (it's gone-don't even look for it) that I would be here. Doing this. Building an actual BRAND. Working with people who I love. I would have laughed and thought, "No way!"

So, let me tell you about my new motto. When I thought of it, I smiled and said, "YES!" out loud. I even wrote it down dozens of times because I loved how it looked on paper too. So inspiring. This motto brings me to another big turn in my business. And that's why it's so big. Let me explain further.

Stop drifting. This is a powerful phrase. You can use it for anything. I'm going to speak to my business chicks here though. Say it again. Out loud. Stop drifting. So good. This is what I want that phrase to do to you.

Focus. As an entrepreneur you have a million ideas drifting back and forth in your head. One minute you want to do this. One minute you want to do that. And you keep drifting because you're never giving your idea a chance. You're never pulling it fully out of the water. Think of all of the ideas you have swimming around in your head. You think of a couple to grab and you struggle tugging them out of the water because it's just too much. The ideas are too big. So you attempt to grab 2, maybe 5, ideas at one time and you half assly (its a word I checked) get them out of the water and you drift around with them. You're not really going anywhere. Just drifting further and further away from your goals.

One idea is keeping you afloat. The others you're kind of struggling with and it's hard for you to give them your full attention and keep them alive. In the meantime you're exhausting yourself trying to keep YOURSELF and your business alive. You're not even realizing WHY you can barely swim anymore. And then you're wondering (as you're treading water for dear life) "why the hell isn't anyone paying attention to me?! Can't they see how hard I'm working? Can't they see all that I've done?"

They can't. Because you're drifting so far out there. Holding onto to too many things! Tell me the truth. How many ideas for your business do you have right now? Do you work on each idea a little bit every day? Is that working for you? That's why I want you to stop drifting. Let go of all of the ideas, but one. Don't worry, they will still be in your ocean when you need one. But you just need to hang onto one of them. When you decide which idea you're going to grab from the water you're going to swim to shore with it. And you're going to swim with ease and determination. Because you've picked a goody! You've picked something you've been dying to work on FOREVER.

Now what? Unearth your mission. You've hit the ground with your idea and now you're going to dig even deeper. What's your mission? Before you dig into that, you need to look at a couple of things first. These points are extremely crucial when it comes to developing a product or service. Anytime you drag that idea to shore, go through this list and write down your answers. This will not only help you create more thoroughly but it will get to the people who truly need you the most.

  • Who is your idea for?
  • Why do they need this?
  • Why would they think they think need this?
  • What do you think is their biggest struggle?
  • Have you been through this yourself?
  • Is this the solution that will pull them out of their funk?

Once you have all of these questions answered, your mission is easier and more clear. You unearthed your mission by truly digging deeper into who you're helping and why you're helping them.

It's not enough to lifestyle blog anymore. It's not enough to just talk AT people. There's too many people out there doing that. The white noise is overwhelming. The easiest way to stand out right now is to solve problems for people who are wearing the shoes you wore five years ago.

And don't shortchange yourself. We all have someone we could help. I'm serious. Dig deep. I mean DEEP. Once you find that icky spot that you've fought and fought through and you know how to get out of it and reach the top, that's it. That's what you're going to focus on. That's what your mission is. Accept it and then give back.
